Connecting your Wix domain

You keep your domain. We just point it at your new site. Here is exactly what that takes.

The short version

Your web address stays registered in your name, in your Wix account. Nobody is taking it from you and you are not signing it over. What changes is the setting that tells the internet where your address should send people. Right now it points at your old Wix site. We change it to point at your new one.

To do that, the technical settings behind your domain move from Wix to our system. That sounds bigger than it is. You still own the domain, you still renew it through Wix, and you can move it back or take it elsewhere whenever you want. It only means we handle the settings instead of you digging through menus, and it is what lets your new site load quickly and stay secure.

There are two ways to get there. Option A is faster and we handle it. Option B keeps you in the driver's seat the whole way.

Option A: add us to your Wix account

Recommended. Takes about two minutes and you are done. You can remove our access any time after the site is live.

  1. Sign in to your Wix account and open your dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings, then Roles & Permissions.
  3. Click Invite and enter tyler@northsiteweb.com.
  4. Choose the Co-Owner (Admin) role. Anything less will not include domain settings, so the invite will not help us.
  5. Send the invite. We take it from there and confirm once your site is live.

Option B: you make the changes

Prefer not to share account access? Completely fine. We do the preparation, you make one change. Work through these in order and wait for our go-ahead at step 3, because doing the last step early is what would knock your email offline.

  1. Sign in to your Wix account, go to Settings, then Domains, then click your domain.
  2. Look for Advanced, then DNS Records. Screenshot everything listed and email it to us. Do not delete anything.
  3. We rebuild your settings on our end first, mail included, and confirm when they are ready.
  4. Back in Wix under Advanced, choose the option to change your nameservers.
  5. Replace the two Wix entries with the two we send you, then save. That is the whole change.

About your email

If you have an email address that ends in your own domain name, it runs on the same settings as your website. It is the one thing worth being careful about, and it is the reason we ask to see your current records before anything moves.

We copy your mail settings across first and confirm they are in place before we switch anything over. Done in that order, your email keeps working exactly as it does today and you will not notice a thing. Tell us up front if you send or receive mail at your domain address.

One thing worth checking on your side: if your mailbox came from Wix as a paid add-on, ask their support whether it stays active once your site is no longer hosted with them. It normally does, since the mailbox follows the domain and your domain is staying put, but it is a quick question that saves an unpleasant surprise.

What does not change

  • You stay the registered owner of your domain.
  • Your renewal stays with Wix, on the same billing you have now.
  • Your email on the domain keeps working.
  • Your web address stays exactly the same. Nothing your customers have saved or written down changes.
  • You can take the domain elsewhere later, with or without us.

How long it takes

The change itself takes a couple of minutes. After that, the internet needs time to catch up, usually a few hours, occasionally up to a day or two. In that window some people may still see the old site while others see the new one. That is normal and it sorts itself out on its own. Your email keeps flowing the entire time.

If the screen does not match

Wix rearranges these menus from time to time, so the wording you see may not match this page word for word. Do not guess. Send us a screenshot of what you are looking at and we will tell you exactly where to click.

Questions on any of it, email tyler@northsiteweb.com.
